Northumbria, the ancient kingdom, stretched from the Tweed to the Tees. Today, that name is used to encompass Northumberland, North and South Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and Durham.

The Northumbrian Association exists to lobby for the return to the North of the iconic treasure The Lindisfarne Gospels and also to promote knowledge and understanding of the rich history, traditions and culture of Northumbria.

It seems especially significant to the Association that the young people of our region are helped to understand and appreciate their fine heritage and be proud of being Northumbrian – a pride which will support them as they take their place in the world and are faced with the unique and difficult choices of this century.

To this end, each year the Northumbrian Association invites young people to think of something or someone associated with the Northumbrian region, which attracts, intrigues or inspires them and to write about it in such a way that it will interest others.
