Date: 13/10/2002 : THE SUNDAY SUN
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge has picked up yet another prestigious award . . . the Stirling Prize for Architecture. In a glittering ceremony held at the town's Baltic arts centre last night, the bridge was crowned winner of the annual award, handed out by the Royal Institute of British Architects. An insider at last night's awards do said: "The place went hysterical went the decision was announced."
The £20,000 prize is given to the designers of the building judged to have made the greatest contribution to British architecture over the past year. Last night's award is just the latest in a long line of accolades for the bridge, designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects. It has received an American Institute of Architects award for excellence in design, the British Construction Industry's Project of the Year prize and the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust and BSkyB's Building of the Year award, among other plaudits.
