It is clear that we have reached a cultural crossroads in this region. Over recent years, interest in Northumbria’s rich cultural heritage has escalated enormously. This has been exemplified in the widespread support of the Northumbrian Association’s Lindisfarne Gospels campaign to return this treasured icon to its home in the North. When the Gospels last visited the area, on loan from the British Library, they were brilliantly displayed by the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle and attracted over 180,000 visitors.
Northumbria has of course, many other treasures both natural and man-made as well as a particularly vibrant identity, proud history and traditions, an impressive record of innovation and success in the arts, in music and in sport. And the Northumbrian Association exists to promote knowledge and understanding, pleasure and pride in all of these.
We invite you to support us in this endeavour. We wish to publish original features, essays, prose or poetry about any icon or issue, past, present or future, indeed anything Northumbrian which inspires or inflames you, the writer, and which you wish to share with others.
